A Peer Group of Psychologists, Psychotherapists and Psychiatrists, Rigorously Trained at Psychoanalytic Institutes and  Committed to Exemplary Work

In addition to holding graduate degrees in psychology, social work, medicine and philosophy, the members of A Psychotherapy Group in the Village have completed extensive course work and clinical training at:

  • The Postgraduate Center for Psychotherapy and Mental Health
  • The National Institute for the Psychotherapies
  • Washington Square Institute
  • The National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis, and
  • The Contemporary Center for Advanced Psychoanalytic Studies.

Until recently, André was also on the faculty of The Contemporary Center for Advanced Psychoanalytic Studies in the Group Psychotherapy Training Program.

In the course of their work at these institutes, our members have spent years learning and studying in three areas Freud considered to be absolutely crucial in the training of good psychotherapists (spelled out in his paper, "The Question of Lay Analysis: Conversations with an Impartial Person," Standard Edition, vol. 20, p. 183). These areas are, in order of importance:

  • A personal psychotherapy of long duration. In practice this means at least four years of  their own in-depth psychoanalysis and/or uncovering psychotherapy, at least two and often three or more times a week, in many cases enhanced by group psychotherapy. The premise here is quite simple: You can't guide others through the difficult, complex and sometimes emotionally frightening process of uncovering psychotherapy unless you've been through it yourself. (See The Challenge of Psychotherapy). Regardless of credentials, certificates or the particular type of training he or she has completed,

The most important question you can ask any therapist is: "How many years of in-depth psychotherapy have you had yourself?"

  • Extensive experience working with real people under the supervision of a senior psychotherapist or psychoanalyst with ten or more years experience at a reputable training institute. For our members this means at least four years of supervised practice requiring once weekly meetings with a supervisor at one of the above institutes to discuss progress, problems and emotional confusions that inevitably arise in the work.
  • Finally, formal course work in the theory and practice of psychoanalysis, psychodynamic and uncovering psychotherapy. For example, here is a partial list of the courses completed by André at Washington Square Institute and the National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis (he has also completed the two-year training program in Analytic Group Psychotherapy at the Postgraduate Center for Psychotherapy and Mental Health): Principles of Psychoanalytic Theory and Treatment, Psychopathology, Psychoanalytic Perspectives on Development - Infancy, Childhood and Adolescence, Psychoanalytic Assessment, Object Relations Theory, Transference and Counter Transference, Techniques of Psychoanalytic Treatment, Techniques of Dream Interpretation, Writings of Sigmund Freud, Analysis of Resistance, Advanced Dream Analysis and various clinical practicums and seminars on the uses of psycho-pharmacology to alleviate stress-induced panic and severe clinical depression.

Offers Two Indispensable Ingredients to Successful Therapy

A Psychotherapy Group in the Village New York Cit
y offers two indispensable ingredients to a successful and meaningful therapeutic experience:

  • Highly trained, experienced therapists and counselors who are able to see through the defensive posturing, game playing, smugness and self-effacement in everyday behavior that disguise deeper feelings of helplessness, shame, guilt, panic, self-loathing or overpowering sadness.
  • Compassionate, caring therapists and counselors with whom you can feel comfortable so they can eventually earn your trust, help you feel freer, more spontaneous and, most importantly, better able to take things from life that you could never let yourself have before.
